about

Over the course of 50 years my brother Greg and I have churned out a steady stream of song ideas. Especially when we were younger. Glass was our “religion” into which we poured our creative juices. We spent nearly every day after school huddled up with our brother-by-another-mother Jerry Cook: Rehearsing, Recording, Rejecting and Rearranging those ideas into sets of music for our band Glass. We didn’t think of our music as “progressive” or “experimental." Or even having a box to go in. We just let it flow. And because we recorded nearly everything we had, we now – in our 60s and 70s – are in possession of a vast archive of bits and pieces. Listening to it now for me is like finding a trunk of old family photographs you didn’t even remember you had. There are some pleasant surprises, and yes, some embarrassments. But mostly a wave of warm nostalgia washes over me. For those who really want to know where Glass came from, here is your chance. This is as intimate as it gets. . .like reading someone’s teenage diary.

The other day, the weather lady was describing a storm heading into Buffalo and said "there is more chaos in sight." When I heard "chaos insight" I laughed out loud at the idea of having some kind of insight or understanding into the randomness of total chaos. Since I was assembling this release at the time, the idea of "Chaos Insight" seemed to fit right in.

Glass has always had an experimental avant-garde side, but it's never been documented like this before. This is a glimpse into how the sausage is made, how tension builds consensus, how three (or four) individuals can come together to create something larger than ourselves. This is Glass's "Faust Tapes."

Søren Kierkegaard said: "Få Livet forstås baglæns, men må leves forlæns" ("Life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forwards.") Perhaps chaos can be understood, in retrospect.

Additional comments/explanations are behind most tracks.

The so-called "butterfly effect" is of course a central tenet in chaos theory, where sensitive dependence on initial conditions can lead to wildly-divergent results.
