about

Greg was a student at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington during the college's inaugural year (1971-1972) of mud & chaos. Glass performed on-campus several times, and this is one of their early concerts-when Greg was still playing vibes, before he traded them in on a Mellotron.

Recorded in the reverberant brick foyer of the brand new Daniel J. Evans Library on campus, the date was probably Saturday December 9 (or maybe 16), 1972. By the 21st Glass were already back home in Pt. Townsend for the holidays, recording "Black on White" and "Edge" at PT High School for "No Stranger to the Skies, Vol. III."

A couple weeks later Glass performed the first-ever live broadcast on Evergreen's just-launched radio station, KAOS-FM -- which, if it was recorded, nobody seems to be able to find the tape. In preparation for that concert, Glass was interviewed by KAOS radio host Bill Hirshman on January 6, 1973-the station's fifth day of operation.

Tracks 13 to 37 present the concert as performed, stage banter and all. Tracks 1-11 are just the music, put in a different order, as if they were a real album release.

The cover shows the iconic clock tower at TESC, one of the first structures erected on campus and about the only one that doesn't look like a WWII bunker.
