about

The fourth volume of archival tapes is a fan favorite, covering the early years (1972-1975) of Revox 2-track and TEAC 4-track recordings (and occasionally cassette) before Glass went into a professional studio.

So continuing the Jeff Sherman Bucket List releases, we have another very special album for you. It's called "No Stranger to The Skies Vol IV." By the time the '70s rolled around Glass had set up operations in Olympia, WA. Greg had begun attending The Evergreen State College (TESC) and one of our venues became the college. At one such concert there in early December '72 we noticed a microphone come slithering over the rail of an overhead balcony directly over our heads. It caught the attention of our drummer Jerry Cook and he poked me gently with a drumstick and motioned upwards towards the descending mic. He didn’t say a word to me but just poked upward with the other drumstick and mouthed the word “GO” and so I did. Climbing the stairs to the overhead balcony I was confronted with a young man, mic cord in hands and a sheepish grin. “Hi,” he said, “I’m Bob Carlberg. . ."

And so a lifelong friendship began. Turned out Bob was a bigger Progressive Music fan than even we were. Though it’s widely known that Glass got their original inspiration from seeing the English band “The Soft Machine” open for Jimi Hendrix in Seattle a couple of years earlier, The Softs were pretty much the extent of our knowledge about what we would come to find out was called “Canterbury” music. As we got to know Bob better, we learned about his voluminous catalog of mostly progressive albums that included bands like Egg, Hatfield & The North, Caravan and so many, many more. His knowledge of obscure music was quite impressive. Be it the German bands like Tangerine Dream to really obscure music Bob had (and more importantly introduced us to), a whole new world of Progressive/ Avant Garde music that surely made an impact on us and our own work. Remember this was before there was the term “Progressive Rock” or “Prog Rock”. Plus, the guy is funny as hell. I’d get letters from him – I remember one in particular -that contained nothing but glitter. Which of course rained down and got all over everything. Other letters would would include cassette tapes of a completely obscure bands album he thought we might like. To say he was generous in his sharing would be a gross understatement. How could you not love the guy?

These recordings, by the way, are posted here:

Fast forward to the mid-'70s and Glass was going through a mid-life crisis. Our original drummer Jerry Cook☉ exited the band and Greg and I were panicking a little bit. How would we keep our forward momentum going? Enter our longtime friend drummer/multi-instrumentalist Paul Black⭐︎. Without hardly dropping a beat, he took the drum throne and we continued with a new and very ambitious plan to record all new material and move to New York and try our luck there. Paul had a sister who lived there. Surely he could take our new demo tape there and get something happening. I won’t go into that adventure right now, suffice to say things didn’t go the way they were planned (do they ever?)

Back to Bob. Glass at this point was nearly completely broke. We had no money for expensive demos and I remembered Bob owned a TEAC 3340 4-track tape recorder. So of course we imposed upon him to use it for this new demo we needed to make. He came to Pt Townsend and we used his TEAC to record our new demo (ostensibly for our New York demo run by Paul). It was basically a live recording done at our old haunt The Arcadia Barn where we had already recorded once before in '73. And would do so again 36 years later for our “Palindrome” album.

SO humility be damned Bob this release is dedicated to you our old friend.
