about

Today was another Mix Day for the upcoming download album "No Stranger To The Skies Vol IV." Today was a much harder mix as the channel assignments had to all be redone from scratch. You see, back in the day when this music was recorded to TEAC 4-track we had to get real inventive when it came to how we added solo tracks, etc. On this particular song, "Give The Man A Hand," we apparently recorded the entire main part of the song to a stereo pair. Which of course would end up giving us two additional tracks to add ARP synth solos, Mellotron, etc. Problem is instead of being on tracks 1 and 3 the stereo pair were recorded to track 1 and 2. Which meant changing the cabling coming out of the back of the Teac 2340 tape deck into the mixer. Also because the basic tracks were already "pre-mixed," it made correcting some of the little instrument volume jumps and deficits tricky. I also had to use Y-adapters for the two remaining tracks into the stereo inputs on my mixer so I could place them in the center as opposed to hard-panning them to either the left or the right. Anyone who has worked with a 4-Trk knows exactly what I'm talking about. Anyway, it all came together and after several attempts the track mix came off great. Also? I got to mix in my favorite old T-Shirt and skivvies! One of the advantages to working in a home studio. . you can get comfortable and get into the groove better. . .Heck, next track I may mix naked!
