about

This is a wild one. Taken from the Glass archives, it was recorded before a live audience in Spring 1976. Glass was always able to find an audience back in our day in Port Townsend when we needed to make a live recording. One of the default venues was the wonderful auditorium at Port Townsend High School. The legendary Glass suite "Broken Oars" was recorded there one weekend in February, 1973.

Even after we had graduated, I could still call the principal Mr. Neil Pottoff up and ask him if we could use the auditorium to record. Or to stage a concert there. I never once remember him saying "No." Glass was so lucky to have those key people throughout our early history. There something "magical" about that auditorium and I feel a connection to it. The very first rock band I ever heard live - 1960's P.T. teen rockers The Mob - I heard there when I was still in Junior High School. The drummer in that band was Paul Black, who would go on to become a close and influential friend, as well as a Glass drummer for a couple years (he's playing on this recording). Even my rock band "The Drive" performed live there for a very enthusiastic concert in 1980. The inspiration for me to get into electric music was born as I sat in the last row in a seat on the aisle near the right back doors. I'd like to have Glass do a concert there again sometime. Or even do a solo Jeff Joad concert there. Enjoy~

"Thumbs" is based on an old piece of ours called "All Thumbs," but rearranged for Paul.
